Overview

Our social mobility centers provide essential support to adults and seniors, helping thousands of people reach life-changing goals.

ABOUT OUR SOCIAL MOBILITY CENTERS

The Matrix Human Services Social Mobility Centers are a group of programs and services provided through our Adult and Senior Division. The collective goal of these Centers is to further support families and rebuild neighborhoods in Detroit.

We believe these programs and services, along with the support of our compassionate staff, have the capacity to move a person from poverty to self-sufficiency. By offering a strong hand-up, not just a hand-out, we help to ensure real and lasting change in the lives we touch.

The Matrix Human Services Social Mobility Centers are located inside The Matrix Center, our thriving community hub in Detroit’s east-side Osborn neighborhood. The 60,000 square foot community center is home to a network of programs and services, including more than 150 mission partner organizations, all designed to meet the unique needs of our greater Detroit area community.

Program Components

Education Services

Designed to help those in the community without a high school diploma or GED achieve those accomplishments.

Services available through this Center include:

  • 100% Online High School Diploma Program
  • Education resources and referrals
  •  Learn more and enroll here.

Resource Services

Many agencies and organizations provide vital services to assist a person moving from poverty to self-sufficiency. Our Resources Center was designed to connect clients with available resources to help address their needs.

Services within this Center include:

  • Assistance locating untapped community resources
  • Connections to FREE resources
    (energy-efficient light bulbs, refrigerators, and more)

Financial Empowerment Services

Services and support are designed to assist clients in reaching their personal economic upward mobility goals.

Services within this Center include:

  • One-on-one financial coaching and counseling
  • Free credit reports and FICO scores
  • Financial capabilities classes
  • Tax Prep Assistance (during tax time only)

Workforce Development Services

The ability to secure and maintain gainful employment is at the heart of social and economic mobility.

Services available through this Center include:

  • Soft skills training
  • One-on-one career coaching and counseling
  • Resume, cover letter, and job search assistance
  • Employment resources and referrals
  • Specialized training in Child Development Associate; Learn More

Senior Services

Matrix has assisted older adults in maintaining healthy, active, and whole lives for more than 6 decades.

The Center for Seniors helps our senior population maintain healthy, enjoyable, and independent lives. Comprehensive services include assistance with transportation to medical appointments, home care services to help support clients remain living in their own homes, and helping our older population remain active with a range of programs at Detroit recreational centers.

Services and programs that help achieve these goals include:

  • Personal home care services (cleaning, cooking, laundering, and more)
  • Free community recreation activities
  • Including water-chair aerobics, community luncheons, health fairs, field trips, and more.
  • Low cost non-emergency medical transportation
  • A Food Rx Program includes free health screenings and food prescription boxes; click here to learn more

Housing Services

Services and support designed to assist clients in reaching their personal economic upward mobility goals.

Approved HUD Local Housing Counseling Agency. Services include:

  • One-on-one pre-purchase homebuyer counseling, rent counseling, and non-delinquency post-purchase counseling. 
  • Group education workshops in financial literacy, rental topics, pre-purchase/homebuyer, and non-delinquency post-purchase.
  • Rent and Mortgage Assistance Program to help you remain in your home – FUNDS ARE EXHAUSTED – We cannot accept applications at this time
  • Join one of our virtual Home Buyer Workshops providing one-on-one housing counseling services, resources, even down payment assistance to those who qualify – Every 2nd Tuesday of the month: 4:00 pm // Every 4th Saturday of the month: 9:00 am – Click HERE to sign up.

Maximize Your Downtime with Proper Financial Budgeting

We will be delivering virtual financial education classes providing our workbooks online for download. We will also continue to provide 1:1 coaching that includes free credit report monitoring and support via video chatting, phone appointments, text messaging services, and email. As always, we will continue to guide our clients regarding financial and housing emergencies, late payments, other resources during the crisis. We can help walk people through the process.

Food for Health

Matrix launched its Food for Health program in 2021 with the hope of helping more families and children in Detroit become healthier and increase access to fresh produce and quality, affordable healthcare. We would love for your family to join this FREE program as we continue to support families like yours! 

Must be 18 to 54 years of age to join

What you get as a Food For Health Participant:

  • Fresh produce 2X per month
  • Access to affordable, quality healthcare
  • Healthcare Resources
  • Other basic needs support such as non-perishable foods, transportation for food delivery

This FREE virtual workshop will teach you the ins-and-outs of buying a home and plenty of resources that can help you through the process, as well as some tips to manage finances 😃. Our HUD Housing Counselors can help you make the dream a reality!

CDA Program

The Childhood Development Associate (CDA®) credential enables early childhood educators to demonstrate certain competencies and, in turn, can help advance their careers. Employees of Matrix Human Services receive free CDA training to help them become the best early childhood educators they can be.

Apply for a substitute teacher or assistant teacher position with Matrix Human Services and our CDA program will help you become trained in a career as a full-time teacher!
