Established in 1953, Matrix Senior Wellness Services (MSWS) provides recreational, social, educational and wellness activities, among other programs and outreach for Detroit seniors, like Elizabeth.
Now a member for her second year, Elizabeth first became involved with MSWS to improve her physical and social wellbeing. At the Patten Center, Elizabeth enjoys playing bingo and participating in chair aerobics with fellow members. Elizabeth added,
“It gives me a place to go and get out of the house instead of sitting around alone and bored.”
Among other services, Elizabeth also benefits from the food vouchers the program provides, which helps her restock her refrigerator and allows her to continue living independently in her home. One of Elizabeth’s favorite program features, however, are the weekly trips the group takes, which has included visits to the movies, shopping trips to the thrift store and sightseeing tours throughout Detroit, including the Detroit Institute of Arts and Belle Isle Park.
“We have a really good group of people,” said Elizabeth. “It’s a good program that keeps you active. They have arts and crafts, Zumba classes, financial literacy presentations and so many other things that are beneficial to people like me.”
A social program designed for Detroit seniors, MSWS not only helps with basic needs, but also promotes a sense of camaraderie among members. If you know a Detroit senior who could benefit from a program like this, contact (313) 831-8650.
